Frequently Asked Questions
Do eyelash extensions damage my natural lashes?
When your lash extensions are applied with us, there will be no damage to your natural lashes. We tailor every set of extensions, at every visit, to your natural lashes to ensure only the correct length, thickness and weight of extension is applied that will not compromise the health of your natural lash. When the correct extensions are applied to correctly isolated natural lashes, you will not experience any damage. Each set of extensions are tailored to not only your natural lashes, but your eye shape and expectations, to provide you with the most fitting set of lashes. We never compromise the health of your natural lashes and will always have an open, transparent consultation with you if we feel your expectations are not suitable to what you can hold.
However this said, there is A LOT of damage that is being seen in the lash industry at the moment. This is from poorly trained (if trained at all) lash technicians that are overloading natural lashes with extensions that are too long, thick and heavy for the natural lashes. There is also a high portion of lash technicians that are not practising proper isolation which is also contributing to damaged natural lashes.
What Are Eyelash Extensions?
Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent, synthetic lashes that are applied individually (for classic) or in fans (Russian Volume) to one natural eyelash with a medical grade adhesive. Eyelash extensions are designed to imitate natural lashes by being thicker at the base and narrowing at the tip. Unlike human hair these lashes hold their shape.
Can I wear eyelash extensions?
Everyone can wear eyelash extensions! The main question is what set would be suitableyou’re your natural lashes and expectations as it definitely is not ‘one size fits all’. They are low maintenance and perfect for both everyday wear as well as special occasions. Anyone can wear them, the only decision you need to make is what look do you want to achieve? If you suffer from allergies or have particular sensitivities please make us aware of this during the time of booking.
Who can apply them? Can I apply them myself?
No you cannot apply these yourself. Only a trained eyelash professional should be applying eyelash extensions to ensure safety and hygiene guidelines are met. Please be careful where you get eyelash extensions applied as there are currently many individuals who claim to be experts that have little knowledge and experience. It is work produced by some of these people that can often give the industry a bad name and give someone that one bad experience that will put them off. Please do not make your decision based on price alone, we have very poor work from clients that have used both cheap and expensive lash stylists.
Do eyelash extensions hurt?
No, not at all. A well applied set of eyelash extensions should be weightless with you barely being able to feel you have them on. If you have experienced a painful set of lash extensions then chances are you have been subject to a poorly selected and applied set.
What is the difference between false lashes and semi permanent lash extensions?
Semi permanent lashes need to be applied by a trained professional, using a medical grade glue to apply them individually to each natural eyelash. False lashes are usually strip or clusters that either you or a makeup artist can apply. These use a latex glue that lasts 2-8 hours before the lashes start to fall off and need to be reapplied, they are designed for one off wear.
What do I need to do before/after my eyelash appointment?
Please come to your appointment with squeaky clean eyelashes and no eye make-up (eye make-up removal will incur a fee). Please note you should not get your eyelash extensions wet for the first 24 hours so please ensure you plans showers etc around it. Please do not schedule any facials/spa/sauna treatments and spray tans in the 24 hours after your appointment and avoid water, steam and humidity immediately after. For the best retention and hygiene it is advised to avoid all oils, mascara and eyeliner whilst wearing lash extensions.
What is the process of applying eyelash extensions?
When you come in for your appointment you will have a consultation to determine the length, volume and look you desire as well as what is realistic for your lashes and eye shape. Your natural lashes will be taken into consideration during this process to ensure they can support the length and volume you want to achieve. Unfortunately this is a step many lash stylists miss or at least don’t take into consideration your natural lashes, resulting in damage to your natural lashes from extensions being applied that are too long or heavy. After the consultation you will lay down (on your back) on a comfortable beauty bed with your head supported by a pillow to maximise comfort throughout the application. Before starting you will have eye pads placed under your eyes to isolate your bottom eyelashes. Your natural lashes will then be primed to ensure the best bond and maximise your retention. Please note it is important NOT TO WEAR EYE MAKE-UP to your appointment as this will occur extra time to remove your make-up (occurring a removal fee) and your lashes should be squeaky clean before your appointment.
Each Classic extension/Volume fan will be individually applied to one natural eyelash. Your natural eyelash with be completely isolated, then the appropriate extension will be dipped into a small amount of medical grade extension glue before being placed on your natural lash. This will be repeated until all your eyelashes have extensions applied and the desired looked has been created.
Why does it take so long to get eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions is a very fine and intricate skill. During your appointment we are isolating each natural eyelash and adhering and extension to it, whilst holding to for long enough that it can cure without sticking to its neighbouring eyelash. During a full set, we could be lashing up to 120 per eye, and this takes time for even the most highly experienced. If you have seen ‘express lashes’ or anyone advertising lashes that are within an hour, you will most likely find these are damaging cluster lashes, or poorly isolated natural lashes, both causing a huge amount of damage to your natural lashes. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is!
How long do eyelash extensions last?
Properly applied eyelash extensions can last forever with regular refills. This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on factors like the full set you have had applied, your natural lash cycle and your aftercare. Peoples lash cycle can vary so you may find you set can look fuller some months more than the next, especially during the spring and autumn shed (where as mammals we lose more hair naturally during these seasons). It is recommended to get refills every 2-3weeks to maintain your lashes.
Why do I need to come for refills every 2-3 weeks?
Naturally we lose 2-5 lashes per eye per day, therefore after 2-3 weeks most people have lost enough lashes that they need to be refilled to keep them looking their best. Also in this time, some extensions have grown out, so it is important we remove and replace them to keep them healthy and looking their best. Depending on how fast you shed your natural lashes and the look you want to maintain determines whether you would rather come back in 2,3,or 4 weeks. Aftercare/how you look after your lashes will also be a huge contributor to the retention of your lashes. Looking after them properly will limit any premature loss
How long does the process take to apply eyelash extensions?
This question really depends on the lashes you are getting applied as well as your natural lashes. Classic, Volume & refills all differ in application time as they all apply a different amount of lashes during the application. Please select your set of lashes on the booking page and we will give you a maximum guideline of how long the appointment will take. Generally it is much quicker, but we allow for the maximum on our booking system to take into account those blessed with a million lashes.
Can I wear contact lenses with eyelash extensions?
Yes most definitely! However for your appointment please remove your contact lenses and wear your glasses. This will ensure the length of your extensions suit your lifestyle and do not hit the lenses of your glasses.
Can I wear make-up with eyelash extensions?
Yes, you can wear make-up but having eyelash extensions can remove the need to wear mascara every day. We do not advise you to use mascara whilst you have lash extensions on or plan to have them refilled. This is not only due to hygiene as (trust us) you simply will not get it all back out, but also it can close your lashes and clump them together as well as cause retention issues due to the ingredients in the mascara as well as the process of removing it. This also applied to false strip lashes. If you come to an appointment with false strip adhesive or makeup clogged into your lashes, we will remove during your lashing time. We will not extend your appointment time to clean your lashes unless we charge you an additional fee, so if you want to maximise the amount of lashes applied at your appointment, please arrive with squeaky clean lashes. Please do not use Eyelash Curlers either, for the same reason. Eyeliner can also have similar issues to mascara. If you insist on wearing eyeliner, please ask us for suggestions of extension safe liners. If you are getting extensions it is important to understand that these things can effect retention. There is no problem with using eyeshadows, but again it comes down to how/what you remove it with that can often be the issue. Waterproof/smudge-proof eye makeup and removers are the biggest ones to avoid.
Can I get my face wet, swim, exercise and shower properly with extensions?
Yes of course! Having eyelash extensions should not impact any of your usual hobbies and activities.
Can I remove eyelash extensions?
Yes, by an experienced lash stylist, they can be gently removed, however not yourself, pulling or twisting them will result in damage to your natural lashes.
Do Eyelash Extensions make natural lashes fall out?
Not at all. As the extensions are attached to individual natural lashes, they will fall out when your natural lashes shed, which for most people is on a 60-90 day cycle. Only poorly applied lash extensions that are too heavy for your natural lashes will cause premature natural shedding.
Why are my natural eyelashes shorter after the extension has shed?
Your natural lashes grow in several growth cycles, so when the lash with the extension sheds naturally a new lash grows in its place replacing it with a baby lash and therefore appearing shorter. Your natural lashes are not harmed by the lash extension if they have been correctly applied. Often it can be put down to the contrast between the two. You will used to having longer, thicker, darker lashes, so when you return to have only your natural lashes you may find you need to readjust as it is far more subtle to what you will be used to.
Is it possible to get an allergic reaction to eyelash extensions?
As Eyelash Extensions are adhered to your natural lashes and they do not come into contact with your skin, you should have minimal chance of having an allergic reaction, however yes of course it does exist. You will not get an allergic reaction to the extension itself, however there is a small chance you can get an allergic reaction to the glue. As all lash stylists use different glues, there is no guarantee you will not experience a reaction even if you have had them done before. We can also build an intolerance to the adhesive/ingredients at any point in our lashing life even after 10 years, although it is not overly common. If you feel you may be at risk then please consult with us prior to your appointment to pop in for a patch test. Allergic reactions are not very common, but if you do experience any discomfort please get in touch immediately. We offer free removals within the first 3 days of application for anyone that may experience an unforeseen issue.
